Job Description

GIS Technician

Position Purpose

Residing within the Innovation Solutions Group, this position is dedicated to delivering Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services and workflow assistance, catering to the GIS needs of both internal teams and external clients.

Essential Functions

GIS mapping

  • Establish the design and specifications for maps, including determining the content, layout, scale, dimensions, projections, and color schemes, and oversee the map-making process to ensure adherence to these specifications.
  • Gather all necessary information and materials for map creation, such as aerial imagery, survey details, archival records, reports, and existing maps.
  • Develop and modify trace maps, charts, tables, and detailed illustrations to meet project requirements.
  • Perform updates and corrections on current maps and charts to maintain accuracy and relevance.
  • Examine and analyze data from ground surveys, reports, aerial photographs, and satellite images.
  • Identify, scale, and orient geodetic points, elevations, and other planimetric or topographic features, utilizing established mathematical calculations.

Internal GIS management

  • Conduct quality checks on final compositions to guarantee their accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop and manage a range of geospatial data formats.
  • Document and maintain comprehensive metadata for all geospatial datasets and mapping processes to ensure consistent data quality and process transparency.
  • Continuously monitor and assimilate the latest developments and updates within the ESRI suite to enhance GIS capabilities and efficient mapping technologies.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver and manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard, calculator, and telephone; talk and hear; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Requirements:

  • An Associate’s or bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, or a related field, or at least two years of relevant ESRI ArcGIS Suite experience.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD; prior experience is beneficial.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Coordinate Reference Systems, with the capability to georeferenced data, perform coordinate transformations, and rectify cartographic inconsistencies.
  • Proficiency in managing and transforming data within the ArcGIS suite.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capacity to execute projects efficiently and autonomously.

Work Environment

The associate works in an office and outside, potentially exposed to a variety of environmental conditions.

Hours of Work and Travel

This is a full-time, nonexempt position, requiring 40 hours per week. Nights and weekend commitments to the firm, its associates and clients could be required.
